Protesters commence summit march

Hundreds of anti-G8 protesters have set off on a march to the summit site in Co Fermanagh.

Spirits were high as the colourful parade made its way through the town of Enniskillen, ahead of setting course for the security cordon that has been set up around the Lough Erne Golf Resort, where the world leaders are meeting.

Scores of police officers, on hand in case troubled flared, were confined to essentially a watching brief as the early stages of the march passed off without incident.

Protesters advocating a diverse range of causes and campaigns, both local and global, took part.

A number of speakers are set to address the crowd when they reach the edge of the security cordon.

So far, the anti-G8 protests in Northern Ireland have not been on a scale initially predicted.

Fears that disorder would break out have also proved unfounded to date.

As the parade progressed numbers swelled well beyond 1,000.

Dozens of onlookers stood in shop fronts and at pub doors in the town centre as the noisy spectacle passed by.
