A woman and her partner have been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of her four-year-old son.

Daniel Pelka died of a head wound after being found unconscious at his home in the Holbrooks area of Coventry last Saturday.

Magdelena Luczak, 26, and Mariusz Krezolek, 32, both of Leyburn Close, appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court for a brief hearing where they spoke only to give their names and addresses and to confirm they understood the murder charge against them.

Prosecutor John McCann told the court Luczak was the child's mother and Krezolek his stepfather. All three lived together in Leyburn Close.

The little boy was found not breathing at around 3am by police and taken to the city's University Hospital, where he died.

No application for bail was made and both defendants were remanded in custody to appear at Warwick Crown Court on March 13.
