8 April 2014

A 73-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual offences as part of the investigation sparked by the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal.

Scotland Yard said that the suspect, the 17th person to be arrested as part of Operation Yewtree, was held in north London today.

The allegations against him are not linked to the late DJ.

So far, seven of those arrested as part of Operation Yewtree have been told they will face no further action.

Another five remain on police bail, including former pop star Gary Glitter, comedian Freddie Starr and veteran broadcaster Paul Gambaccini.

Four people have been charged in separate cases, including presenter and artist Rolf Harris, PR guru Max Clifford and DJ Dave Lee Travis.

All the men deny any wrongdoing.

Driver David Smith was also charged but he died before facing trial.
