A woman was detained by police after reportedly carrying a child's severed head through the streets of Moscow.

The suspect was held by police after she allegedly travelled to a metro station, took a young girl’s head from her bag and started shouting that she had killed the child, Russian media reported.

In footage published online, the woman is heard crying aloud: “I am a terrorist.”

The woman was videoed near Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in northwest Moscow, RBK News reported.

Bystanders said it was hard to determine if it was a man or a woman, as the person was dressed head to toe in black.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has released a statement to say that the body of a child, aged three or four, was discovered after a fire at an apartment block in the city.

The suspect is believed to be a children’s nanny in her late 30s, the investigative committee said.

She is said to have waited until the child’s parents left the apartment with an older sibling, and killed the child before setting the apartment on fire.
