This is the hilarious moment a chimpanzee bats a drone out of the sky before a small gang of primates gathers round to inspect the wreckage.

The device, which had been flying around the animals' enclosure at the Royal Burgers' Zoo in the Netherlands, had been shooting a panoramic video of the area. Zoo bosses had hoped to capture footage of the chimps in their natural habitat, undisturbed by human intruders.

But the drone had rather the opposite effect.

Seconds into the video one chimp, obviously somewhat perturbed by the whirring, unwelcome visitor, is seen brandishing a large stick and swiping at the airborne camera.

A moment later the stick makes contact and the drone and GoPro camera are sent crashing to the ground.

"Royal chimpanzees of Burgers' Zoo have proven once again how intelligent they are," zoo staff wrote under the YouTube video.

"They discovered the spying plane immediately and the animals immediately armed themselves with long sticks against the prying electronic intruder.

"One animal hit the drone down, while his peers quickly overpowered the "prey".

"Despite the completely destroyed drone the GoPro still captured some very special images."
