After his debate with Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump told reporters he was pleased not to have brought up her husbands "indiscretions", before complaining he was given a defective microphone.

During a 90-minute debate with his Republican rival, Trump was ccused of racism, saying "crazy things" and living in his "own reality" by Clinton.

But the Republican candidate told CNN he was very pleased with his performance and that he had not made the debate personal.

He said: "I'm very happy I was able to hold back on the indiscretions with repect to Bill Clinton because I have a lot of respect for Chelsea Clinton.

"I just didn't want to say what I was going to say."

Asked what he was going to say, he said people might be able to hear it at the next debate.

But in the "spin room" following the debate he claimed he had been given a malfunctioning microphone.

He said: "They also gave me a defective mic, did you notice that?

"My mic was defective within the room."

He went on: "I wonder. Was that on purpose?"

Clinton, meanwhile, tweeted a poll by CNN, which showed her winning the debate by 62 per cent to 27 per cent.

She wrote: “43 days left. Let’s go win this thing.”
