Trump takes on Google: US president accuses firm of 'rigging' search results to make him look bad

Donald Trump today accused Google of “rigging” its search results to make him look bad.

In an angry outburst on Twitter, the US president claimed the technology company was promoting negative stories to users looking for the latest news on him.

He said Google was “suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good”.

A search for “Trump News” on the site only showed reports “Fake New (sic) Media”, he claimed, adding: “This is a very serious situation - will be addressed.”

President Trump has launched a string of attacks on the media in the past, calling the press “the enemy of the people,” “very dangerous”, “sick” and “fake news.”

In his new outburst, he suggested the search giant could even be breaking the law by not showing enough positive stories.

“Google search results for “Trump News” shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD.

“Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of results on “Trump News” are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous.

“Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!”

Mr Trump sent the post at 5.24am local time, apparently after having searched his own name.

It was unclear where the statistic he used originated from.

Last month, the president wrote on Twitter about how social media was “discriminating” against right-wing voices.

It comes after more than 300 US newspapers came together to defend press freedom against the President’s attacks, in an effort coordinated by the Boston Globe.

A spokeswoman for Google denied manipulating search results.

She told the Standard: “When users type queries into the Google Search bar, our goal is to make sure they receive the most relevant answers in a matter of seconds.

“Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don't bias our results toward any political ideology.

“Every year, we issue hundreds of improvements to our algorithms to ensure they surface high-quality content in response to users' queries. “We continually work to improve Google Search and we never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment."
