At least eight people inlcuding a suspected gunman have been killed in a shooting at a house party in Texas.

The gunman opened fire in the home at about 8pm on Sunday in the city of Plano, just less than 20 miles northeast of Dallas.

According to reports in the US, the shooting took place at a house party where revellers were watching a Dallas Cowboys American football match.

One witness told Fox News she saw a man pull out an automatic weapon after arguing with a woman outside the home, before starting his shooting rampage.

Plano police spokesman David Tilley said police initially responded to a report of shots fired.

When the first officer arrived and went inside the home, the officer confronted the suspected shooter.

The officer opened fire and killed the suspect, Mr Tilley said.

Two others were injured in the shooting and their conditions were not released.

The victims and suspect have not been identified. All of those killed and injured were believed to be adults.

Police also have not determined a motive for the shooting.

Mr Tilley said that a shooting of this magnitude was unusual for Plano, especially in such a quiet neighbourhood.

He could not say whether police had been called to the home before Sunday.

A police investigation is ongoing.
