A seven-month-old baby has died after 'her father forgot to take her to day care before going to work.'

The girl was rescued from a vehicle at the car park of Eagle Pass High School in Texas on May 16 but died in hospital.

According to local news, the temperature in Eagle Pass on that day topped 37C.

Police say her father is a teacher at the school and forgot to drop his seven-month-old off at day care.

Officer Humberto Garza says investigators believe the baby’s death was accidental.

In a statement Eagle Pass Police department said: "Officers and medics arrived, and a small female child was transported to the emergency room after it had been determined the child had been left in a vehicle within the school parking lot for an undetermined amount of time.

"The child was later pronounced deceased and by a local justice of the peace.

"The Eagle Pass Police Department is currently assisting the Eagle Pass Independent School District Police Department with this ongoing investigation."

According to the Palestine Herald, more than 700 children have died in the US after being left in a hot car over the past 20 years. 100 of those deaths were in Texas.
