Samantha Markle on sister Meghan’s pregnancy: Royal baby news 'makes everything that happened over the past year disappear'

Olivia Tobin16 October 2018

Meghan Markle’s half-sister Samantha has broken her silence after learning the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting a baby in the spring.

Ms Markle, who has had controversial words to say about Meghan and Prince Harry in the past, was unusually quiet on Monday immediately after the news emerged of the couple expecting their first child.

Speaking to the Sun, Ms Markle said she wants her younger sister to be "happy and calm" with the child.

She said: "It just makes everything that happened over the last year disappear. I want Meghan to be happy and calm and have peace. Everybody needs to be positive.

“I would hope that — for the sake of the baby, the family, the world and my dad — that leaving him out of the statement was not intentional.

“I hope my dad is included and at a proper time. If he is excluded, I won’t be happy. It is in the best interests of the baby for my dad to be included.

“A baby changes everything and softens everyone. I would only hope that there would be some adjustment or some way of including him."

Her comments come a day after her spokesperson said she would not be commenting on the announcement of the baby.

Ms Markle has been outspoken on her opinions towards her sister in the past and stated that she could do more to help their father, who did not attend the royal wedding due to his health.

Writing on Twitter last month, she said: “I am not candy coating anything anymore! The DUCHASS should be human to our father who has given her everything…

“He was the one who was always there for her. Fake waves and smiles can stop. The duchASS can bow to the daddy.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s announcement came as the couple prepared for their first foreign royal tour since their marriage.

So far, on their trip to Australia they have been given toys and gifts ahead of the baby’s birth, in spring.

The Duchess of Sussex has said she and her husband are "excited" about becoming parents.

Meghan spoke to mathematician and Australian TV personality Eddie Woo, 33, at a reception at Admiralty House and conversation turned towards parenthood.

When he said that his own children - aged five, seven and 10 - require "a lot of energy", she replied: "We're ready! We're excited to join the club."

Harry also spoke about the exciting announcement, saying: “We also genuinely couldn't think of a better place to announce the upcoming baby, whether it's a boy or a girl, so thank you very, very much.”
