Two men reportedly plunged more than 50ft from a cliff while playing Pokémon GO.

The gamers were trying to collect Pokémon characters on their smartphones when they fell off the ledge in Encinitas, San Diego on Wednesday.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported one man fell about 50 feet down the cliff while the other plunged 90ft onto the beach.

Both were rescued and taken to the city’s Scripps La Jolla Hospital. The severity of their injuries is unknown.

Encinitas fire chief Robbie Ford said one of the men told him they had been playing the popular smartphone game when they fell.

Lifeguards treated the man on the beach while firefighters used ropes and harnesses to pull the man on the cliff to safety.

According to San Diego Sheriff’s department, the men climbed over a fence to find Pokémon creatures despite warning signs of unstable cliff faces.

The gaming craze, which was officially released in the UK on Thursday, allows players to try and catch fictional characters in real world scenarios.

uthorities have warned people to stay safe while playing the app.
