Police in America have launched an investigation after a woman posted a picture on Facebook of a dog with her mouth duct-taped shut.

In a post that has since been shared more than 300,000 times, Katie Brown wrote: "This is what happens when you don't shut up", and posted a picture of a chocolate labrador with silver duct table binding her muzzle.

Despite facing a huge backlash online, Brown has refused to take the photo down, and even defended her actions in comments on the post, saying: "'I can't lie I did it for sixty seconds. It was time out and no more barking", and "Don't panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasn't barked since... POINT MADE!!!"

Police in Flordia received dozens of calls from people concerned for the animal's welfare, and South Daytona City Police Department posted on Facebook saying a full investigation would take place.

The post read: "We have information to indicate that the dog is OK at this time.

"However, the police will be contacting this person once she returns to out City. Rest assured that a full investigation will be done and appropriate action will be taken."

A later post said the woman had moved out of the state but that the incident would be followed up with authorities in Connecticut.
