Korean-born Jim Yong Kim is the surprise choice of President Barack Obama to head the World Bank, which focuses on fighting poverty and promoting development in 187 countries.
Officials believe the choice of Kim, the 52-year-old president of Dartmouth College in the US, will help counter criticism from developing countries weary of America’s stranglehold on the top job.
Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers was the previous favourite for the job.
