Netflix has been hit by a major outage that stopped the popular streaming website working around the world.

Viewers were unable to watch films and TV on the website and an error message appeared instead of videos.

Dismayed subscribers were given a message reading “Netflix error: this title is not available to watch instantly” while trying to watch TV shows and films.

The company’s customer service team said it was aware of the streaming problems.

It said the issue was being investigated after it was reported on Monday.

In a statement on its Twitter account, Netflix said: “We are aware of members having trouble streaming on all devices.

“We are investigating the issue and appreciate your patience.”

The firm later updated viewers, saying that the streaming issues had been resolved.

In an updated tweet, it said: “The streaming issues we reported earlier have now been resolved.

“Thank you for your patience, and as always, happy streaming!”
