McDonald's today admitted it had bitten off more than it could chew and took down a "build your own burger" creator after it backfired.

People flooded to the makeburgerhistory.co.nz website after branches of the fast food chain in New Zealand launched an offer giving customers free sides for their innovative designs.

But most appear to have had no intention of claiming complimentary fries, instead abusing the tool to create outlandish concepts or burgers based on offensive stereotypes.

Submissions included “The Fred West”, a reference to the notorious British serial killer, “Saucy buns”, and “Vegan Trap”.

There was also burger made entirely from lettuce and a “Bernie socialist fest” labelled the “most progressed burger known to man" that was a measly two buns.

And some were far more offensive, making light of racial and gender stereotypes.

Hundreds of submissions were posted until the site ceased to be active, with the link redirecting users to New Zealand McDonald’s homepage.

McDonald’s could not immediately be reached for comment.
