Former London Mayor Ken Livingstone today said the bloody terror attacks in Paris happened because western foreign policy had come “back to haunt us”.

As French people came to terms with the atrocity that left 129 dead, Mr Livingstone pointed a finger at the “endless interventions” of Britain, France and the US.

He also argued that air strikes were not the answer to tackling the Islamic State, claiming a ground force of coalition troops would be needed.

Speaking on BBC Radio, the Labour politician said: “It’s the endless interventions of Britain and America and France in Arab countries that has come back to haunt us.

“If we are to defeat Isis and Isil, we’ve got to have a coalition of the UN, there’s got to be Chinese troops, Russian troops, Brazillian, South Africans.

“It can’t just be the West intervening in the Middle East largely because of its oil interest.”
