A kangaroo that captured world attention when it smashed through a window and woke the occupants of a suburban home in Melbourne was on the run again today after escaping from an animal shelter.

The distressed marsupial, which was being cared for at a wildlife sanctuary, amazed staff when it leapt a seven-foot fence and disappeared into surrounding bush.

Rescuer Manfred Zabinskas said the kangaroo took a flying leap and cleared the enclosure in a single bound.

A volunteer at Five Freedoms Animal Rescue shelter, Helen Round, said on social media: “At least he is now in a vast expanse of forest, safe from cars, trucks and people.”

The kangaroo crashed into a home on Saturday night, injuring itself and damaging the property.

Mafi Ahokavo, who was asleep with his partner and three-year-old son, managed to contain it in the bathroom, before animal rescue staff came to take it away.
