"Kamala Harris didn't need to rudely interrupt. Her face said it all"

Vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris made her point clear even when she wasn't speaking during her televised debate with Mike Pence.

Democratic challenger Ms Harris served raised eyebrows, pitying smiles and side-eyes during the debate in Utah on Wednesday night in response to interruptions and claims from Mr Pence.

In one moment, following Mr Pence’s claims that Ms Harris and democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden wanted to "raise taxes", Ms Harris responded by slowly shaking her head, smirking and quietly saying "wow".

And, after a number of interruptions, the California senator repeatedly said: "Mr Vice President, I’m speaking. I’m speaking."

Social media users were quick to notice the exchanges, with many producing memes and GIFs of Ms Harris' facial expressions.

"Kamala Harris said just as much without words," The Recount said on Twitter. "Kamala Harris did not bring her poker face tonight."

Another Twitter user said: "Kamala's face - I am screaming right now."

Reporter Ryan Saavedra said: "The face Kamala Harris made when Mike Pence stated that she and Joe Biden are going to overthrow the Supreme Court with court packing."

A fourth Twitter user wrote: "Kamala Harris didn't need to rudely interrupt. Her face said it all."

Another said: "Kamala Harris is the definition of, 'if my mouth doesn’t say it, my face will'."

But former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said: "Senator Harris is articulate but comes across as arrogant and the facial expressions are hurting her."

Republican US House candidate David Dudenhoefer also said that Ms Harris was “unlikable with her smug facial expressions".

Reporter Ben Shapiro said: "Harris looks deeply uncomfortable. She should be. She's losing, and losing badly."

While the debate covered a range of topics including foreign policy, abortion and the economy, Covid-19 was at the forefront.

Ms Harris condemned Donald Trump's leadership of the public health crisis as the “greatest failure of any presidential administration in the history of our country".

She also declared that she would not take a vaccine if President Trump endorsed it without the backing of medical professionals.

Mr Pence, who leads the president's coronavirus task force, acknowledged that "our nation's gone through a very challenging time this year."

But he added: "I want the American people to know, from the very first day, President Trump has put the health of America first.”

There were heated exchanges early on, but overall it was a far more tame affair than the opening presidential debate eight days earlier.

Separated by plexiglass barriers, the candidates debated in an auditorium where any guest who refused to wear a face mask was to be asked to leave.
