A British grandfather imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for possessing alcohol is set to be released within the next week.

Karl Andree was arrested in Jeddah in August last year after police found homemade wine in his car when he was pulled over by officers.

He has served more than a year in jail and his family believed he would face 350 lashes as part of his punishment.

Foreign Sectary Philip Hammond confirmed during a visit to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday that Mr Andree, 74, would be released and reunited with his family within the next week.

He said: “This is a good outcome and I'm grateful to minister Al-Jubeir and all other people who have been involved, especially the His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, for ensuring that we now have a good outcome.”

Mr Hammond said the case had caused "concern" in Britain but it was because of the "strength, depth and breadth" of the UK's relations with Saudi Arabia that they were able to "achieve effective results".

The Foreign Secretary is currently holding talks with King Salman and other members of the Saudi royal family and other officials during his visit to the Gulf state.

More than 230,000 people signed a petition calling on the Prime Minister to intervene and stop Mr Andree, who has battled three types of cancer, for facing further punishment.

Following the petition, David Cameron had vowed to personally act to help get Mr Andree, who has lived in the Middle East for the past 25 years, reunited with his family.
