A pair of Good Samaritans found a lost bag stuffed with $25,000 (£19,500) in cash - and returned it to the owner without taking a single penny.

Convenience shop owner Gautambhai Patel, from Georgia, US, was driving with the sack of cash in his car when he received a phone call and pulled over.

He finished the call and drove off home - only to realise he'd left the bag on his car, and it had fallen off.

In a frantic search for the money, Mr Patel called Rincon Police, who sprang into action.

"Our office began investigating but hoped that whoever would find the bag would do the right thing and turn it in," officers from Rincon said in a Facebook post.

Within a few hours, Mr Patel was amazed to receive a call from the department saying two residents named Jeff and Mechelle Green had returned the bag untouched.

Officers praised the Greens as "amazing people", writing: "They recovered the bag and made sure it was returned to the rightful owner.

"We always encourage citizens to do the right thing both morally and legally! Thank you to the Greens!"

Meanwhile Mr Patel praised the pair, telling ABC News: "The family is a good family. They have a good culture.”

People responded with delight on Facebook.

"There is still good in the world!! Mr & Mrs Green are proof," wrote one person.

"It's so heartwarming to hear about their honesty and willingness to do the right thing," said another.
