A student caught up in the Florida high school shooting live tweeted his terror as a gunman went on a rampage killing 17 people.

Aidan Minoff posted images of students barricaded in classrooms and hiding under desks as suspected mass killer Nikolas Cruz, 19, opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

At least 17 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in the shooting on Wednesday afternoon.

At about 3pm, Aidan, a freshman at the school, posted: “My school is being shot up and I am locked inside. I’m f***** scared right now.”

Shortly after he confirmed he and fellow students were “still locked in” adding he was checking local news for the latest on how events were unfolding outside.

Shortly before 4.30pm, Aidan, who attends the school with his brother, confirmed that he had made it out of the school alive.

He wrote: “We have been liberated. God bless, America.”

He added in another tweet: “Love each other. You may never know when it may be the last day you meet someone.”

Shortly before 6pm, Adian and his brother had been reunited with their parents.

He said: "My brother and I are with our parents safely in the car.

"Thank you everyone, I appreciate the messages but we need healing. God bless, America. We will never forget 2/14/18.”

He later thanked people for praying for the victims.

Police swarmed the school searching for "heavily armed" suspect Cruz, who was detained shortly after the attack.

Footage showed the former student, who had been expelled from the school for disciplinary reasons, being bundled into the back of a police car wearing a burgundy top and jeans.

He was described by former classmates as a troubled "outcast" who was obsessed with guns.
