The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their mental health campaign to Sweden today to learn how the country is leading the way in treating young people.

After the fun of bandy hockey and the glamour of a black-tie dinner with actress Alicia Vikander yesterday, the royal couple today focused on a subject close to their hearts.

William and Kate, along with Prince Harry, have championed mental health awareness with their Heads Together campaign.

Today the couple, joined by Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel, met academics at Karolinska Institute who explained Sweden’s pioneering work with young teenagers in schools.

The royals exchanged kisses as they met outside the centre.

Kate, who is expecting her third child, wore a red and white houndstooth Catherine Walker coat, an Alexander McQueen dress and earrings by Sweden’s In2 Design.

Princess Victoria was in a light blue trouser suit and pale pink coat while her husband wore a camel overcoat. William arrived in a jacket but later added a long navy coat for a walkabout.

Kate and William talked to scientists who told them that one of the areas Sweden’s experts focus on is the impact of physical activity on mental health.

They were also told about the Youth Aware of Mental Health (Yam) programme for 14- to 16-year-olds. Yam promotes knowledge about mental health through dialogue and role-play. It operates internationally, including in the UK.

The royal foursome then headed to a comprehensive school in central Stockholm, where they joined children taking part in the Yam programme during a mental health activity session, and spoke to mentors who run the training.

This afternoon, the two royal couples were visiting a leading department store, Nordiska Kompaniet, to open an exhibition of British design, fashion and brands. Later the couples were due to have a private tea at the Prince and Princess’s official residence, Haga Palace.

This evening, William and Kate were due to attend an event at the Fotografiska Gallery, which at night boasts glittering views over Stockholm.

The Duke was due to speak at the event, a celebration of contemporary culture with guests representing music, film, television, theatre, technology, dance, art and sport.
