'Covfefe': Donald Trump posts mysterious tweet after White House media strategy shake-up

President Donald Trump has caused confusion with a bizarre late night tweet just hours after his top PR chief quit.

The seemingly-incomplete Twitter message was posted online shortly after midnight in the US and simply read: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe."

It comes amid suggestions the White House is set to shake up its media strategy with President Trump - rather than a press representative - set to make more direct announcements to media.

The US leader's mysterious tweet was posted online at just after midnight in the US (early morning UK time) and retweeted by more than 45,000 people in just an hour.

The President later deleted the message but seemed to embrace the furore it had created.

He said in a new tweet posted at just after 11am UK time: "Who can figure out the true meaning of 'covfefe' ??? Enjoy!"

Many have speculated the comment was meant to read “press coverage” and was an accident but thousands poked fun at President Trump.

The word “covfefe” began trending on the social media site as many people cracked jokes.

One user played on the slogan of President Trump’s election campaign with the joke: “Make America Covfefe Again”.

Other internet users took the opportunity to hit out at the US leader with many asking: “You OK, Donald?”

Cody Johnston said: “It’s been thirty minutes, Mr President, and I am honestly asking, are you okay?”

The online message was shared early on Wednesday morning UK time, or shortly after midnight in the US.
