A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a swimming pool at a holiday villa his family were renting.
The youngster is understood to have fallen into the pool while playing with other children as his parents entertained friends at the large property overlooking a golf course in the Costa del Sol resort of Mijas.
The teenage son of one of the friends sounded the alert after discovering the boy floating in the water.
One of the parents present at the gathering tried to revive him before paramedics took over after being called to the house.
He was pronounced dead at the scene after the life-saving efforts failed.
The tragedy happened yesterday on Sunday evening just before 9pm at a detached villa in a leafy residential street in hills a short drive from La Cala de Mijas, on the coast between Marbella and Fuengirola.
The cul-de-sac overlooks a golf course which is popular with British expats and tourists.
An investigating judge has been placed in charge of a routine investigation into the incident.
A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Mijas confirmed the death.
He said: “The boy was from a family who were staying at a house where there was a party being held. In the house there is a swimming pool.
“The child – a four-year-old – went into the swimming pool and could not swim, and he has died.”
An autopsy was due to take place this morning in Malaga.
