A four-year-old British boy has reportedly drowned at the start of a family holiday in Spain.

The youngster is said to have died after falling into a swimming pool in the Costa Blanca resort of Torrevieja a short drive south of Alicante.

The tragedy occurred at a private house on a residential estate, around 6pm on Wednesday.

It is not yet clear if the family were renting the property or own it.

Paramedics who were called to the scene tried unsuccessfully to revive the youngster.

A post-mortem was due to take place today.

Local reports said the youngster had just arrived with his family for the start of a sunshine break.
