The body of a two-year-old boy has been found after he was snatched by an alligator at a Disney resort in Florida.

The child was dragged into a lake as he played at the edge of the water in front of his parents on Tuesday night.

His father had desperately tried to pull him free from the reptile’s jaws, suffering cuts to his hands, but could not save him.

Police confirmed the body had been found after a major search operation involving police boats, divers and a helicopter.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said it was found "completely intact" just 10 to 15 yards from where he was attacked, in about six feet of water.

Police named the boy as Lane Graves, whose family of four were on holiday from the midwestern US state of Nebraska.

Wildlife officials had earlier caught and killed five alligators from the lagoon to examine them for traces of the boy but found no evidence they were involved.

Disney World closed its beaches on Wednesday as search teams had scoured the Seven Seas Lagoon, a man-made lake reaching 14 feet in depth.

A Disney representative said the entertainment giant closed the beaches "out of an abundance of caution".
