A woman has sparked a huge social media debate after claiming that chocolate digestives should be eaten with biscuit side face up.

Amna Saleem wrote on Twitter: “Help me settle something – when you eat a digestive biscuit you eat it with the chocolate face down right?

“So you can enjoy maximum chocolate yes?”

Following a heated discussion online, McVitie's then responded to the tweet to confirm that the chocolate is on the bottom of the biscuit.

But many chose to disagree with the comment, with one joking: “I’m calling the biscuit police this is a biscuit eating offence.”

James Creasey said: "Well the chocolate is on the bottom of the biscuit, watch them being made, so chocolate down is the correct way up."

Eventually McVities waded into the debate to help explain how their product should be eaten.

McVities said on Twitter: "Our Digestives run through a chocolate reservoir so the chocolate is on the bottom!"

McVitie’s started producing chocolate digestives in 1925, and today more than 71 million packets of their treats are eaten in the UK every year.
