12 April 2012

A 20-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a baby's body was discovered in the boot of a car, police have said.

The grim discovery was made by two women who were collecting belongings they were asked to look after in Yeovil, Somerset.

A woman from Chard, Somerset, was arrested, interviewed and released on police bail pending further inquiries following the find in St Andrew's Road.

An investigation into the baby's death is continuing and is expected to take some time.

It is understood experts have been called in to identify the infant's remains, which were found on August 1, as they had started to decompose.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to St Andrew's Road in Yeovil by somebody reporting the discovery of a body.

"Officers found what is believed to be the body of a baby in the boot of a car.

"It had been discovered by two women in some belongings that they had been asked to look after.

"An investigation has begun to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and this is expected to take some time.

"We are working to establish the age of the baby."
