A plume of black smoke filled the sky above Welling High Street this afternoon after a fire broke out at a shop.

Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters rushed to tackle the blaze at around 4pm, which tore through a bottom floor shop with residential flats above it.

Half of the shop and ground floor were alight and in dramatic images the entire shop was engulfed in black smoke.

Video showed fire engines racing to the fire, engines blaring, as shocked bystanders watched on.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established and there are no reported injuries.

London Fire Brigade said in a statement: “Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at a shop with flats above on Welling High Street this afternoon.

“Half of the shop on the ground floor is alight. The Brigade was called at 4pm and is still at the scene.

“Fire crews from Bexley, Plumstead, Erith, Sidcup and surrounding stations are at the scene. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”
