Police searching for a missing boy in the Thames found a body in the water this afternoon.

Surrey Police had launched a search at 2.20pm after a teenager was spotted in the river, near Sunbury Lock in Walton-on-Thames.

The police helicopter was scrambled to aid the search operation, alongside a team of divers from Specialist Group International.

At around 4.40pm, the 15-year-old's body was recovered from the river, police say.

Sue Chambers tweeted: "Police, paramedics and helicopter on scene. No sign of child who was swimming with friends.

"Children having fun turned into tragedy."

The boy’s next of kin has been informed.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident, but it is not believed to be suspicious or that there is any third party involvement at this time.

"Members of the public are thanked for their assistance with the search."
