The University of Sheffield has launched LGBT+ housing to allow students to easily adapt to university life.
Those applying for accommodation for this September's uptake will be able to opt for LGBT+ accommodation.
The university says that the move is to ensure that students "feel safe within the Students Union, at university and especially in their own home."
The flats themselves will be within the wider halls of residence and not apart from other flats.
However the move has been criticised by Simon Thompson, director of Accommodation for Students who has warned it could promote segregation on campus.
He told the Telegraph: "University is about opening your horizons and meeting people from different cultures, different backgrounds, different sexualities."
Celeste Jones, Women's Officer at the University of Sheffield said: "We strive to ensure that all university accommodation is LGBT+ inclusive; bullying and harassment is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
"However, LGBT+ students have felt that their experience in university accommodation would be improved by having the option to live in LGBT+ specific accommodation."
She added that the accommodation is by no means compulsory however they wish to give students the choice.
A report by Stonewall found that more than two in five LGBT+ students hid or disguised that they were LGBT at university because they were afraid of discrimination.
While more than a third of trans students faced negative comments or conduct from university staff in the last year because they were LGBT.
