UK weather latest: Storm Callum leaves at least two people dead

James Morris14 October 2018

At least two people have died after parts of the UK were devastated by Storm Callum.

A man was killed in a landslide near the village of Cwmduad in Carmarthenshire, west Wales.

Wales had bore the brunt of Callum's wind and downpours, and the fatal landslide happened on an A-road. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, another man was swept away by rough seas in Brighton, east Sussex.

The man was found in water near Brighton Palace Pier. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.

Meanwhile, police in Wales also revealed about 100 sheep had been washed away in the Carmarthenshire village of Pontargothi.

But while forecasters were predicting a fresh band of rain in the south-west on Sunday, Storm Callum was set to fade.

Meteorologist Simon Partridge said: "Those areas further west which have seen huge amounts of rain will finally turn drier, brighter, with some decent sunny spells developing by the end of the day on Sunday.

"The areas that have seen the bulk of the sunshine over the last couple of days will then be under the cloud, with patchy, light rain and drizzle at times.”

The improved weather will come as a relief to communities hit by Callum after rivers burst their banks, homes were flooded and power supplies were wiped out.

The weather is also expected to be much calmer next week.

Cloud and patchy rain is likely to remain in the south-east on Monday, with generally clear, dry conditions further north and west.

"There's a cool clear start for many parts of the UK on Monday,” Mr Partridge said, “and actually for much of the UK it's a dry fine and sunny day to boot.”
