London and the south east is expected to be battered with heavy downpours on Easter Monday as prolonged April showers set in.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for parts of London and the south east, the south west and across Wales for most of Monday.

More than 100 flood alerts and seven flood warnings were in place across England on Sunday.

The north and part of Scotland has been hit with a yellow weather warning for snow as a low pressure front sweeps in from the west.

Britons will wake to heavy rain on bank holiday Monday sparking fears of travel chaos on road and rail routes as millions return home from an Easter break.

As much as 70mm of rain is expected in some parts of the UK.

Met Office forecaster John West said west London and areas near Heathrow Airport could be worst hit by heavy downpours.

“A lot of the UK will wake to heavy rain with around 10 – 15mm expected in the south east throughout Monday.

“West, west London will be worst affected in the capital as a low pressure front comes in from the south west,” he told the Standard.

Skies look likely to brighten late on Monday bringing spells of evening sunshine, he added.

But the beginning of April looks set to be blighted by yet more rain.

Mr West added: “The weather will be fairly typical of April with lots of rain broken up by some sunny spells.

“It won’t be cold, however, with temperatures during the first week reaching highs of around 13C.”

A yellow snow alert has been issued for parts of northern England and Scotland.

Some rural communities could become cut off, mainly across the northern Pennines and Scottish Borders, with "significant accumulations" and up to 10cm of snow forecast.

"There could be some disruption in the north.

"Further south it will be more of a transient feature and not much settling on the roads," forecaster Helen Roberts added.

For those who are travelling across Britain, warnings have been issued that train services could be disrupted and heavy traffic will take to the roads.

The AA warned motorists to take extra care and said the bank holiday weekend is "likely to be one of the busiest on the roads in recent years".

It is not unusual weather in the UK in April - the month sees an average of 2.3 snow days each year.
