The remnants of an Atlantic hurricane are set to bring an end to the UK’s heatwave in parts of the country but the South will continue to sizzle.

The Met Office said the remains of Hurricane Chris will push fresher air into parts of northern England and Scotland, which could lead to rain showers at the start of next week.

Forecaster Becky Mitchell said: “The remnants of the hurricane will be tracking across the Atlantic. It will help to push a weather front towards us.

“On Sunday and Monday western and northern parts of the UK will see fresher conditions and some rain.”

But London, southern England and Wales will continue to enjoy the sweltering heatwave which began more than two weeks ago.

Monday marked the 16th day in a row that temperatures above 28C have been recorded in the UK, the longest hot spell in five years.

Ms Mitchell added: “The south east of the UK will still be very warm for a while. On Saturday and Sunday a lot of places will still be very warm.”

“Much of England and Wales will still be very hot,” she added.

Temperatures in London over the weekend are expected to be in the high 20s as people gather in pub gardens and an outdoor screens for the World Cup and Wimbledon finals.
