A further 128 people have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus, according to the latest figures released by the Government.

The number of people who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 in hospitals, care homes and the wider community was 42,589 as of 5pm on Friday, the Department of Health (DoH) announced on Saturday.

The Government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which is thought to have passed 53,000.

The DoH also said in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Saturday, 230,550 tests were carried out or dispatched, with 1,295 positive results.

Overall, a total of 7,714,201 tests have been carried out and 303,110 cases have been confirmed positive.

The DoH figures were published after NHS England confirmed a further 71 people have died in hospital in England after contracting coronavirus.

The fatalities bring the total number of confirmed reported Covid-19 deaths in hospitals in England to 28,292.

The victims were aged between 41 and 95 years old. One, aged 68, had no known underlying health conditions.

Every region of England reported new deaths in the latest figures, apart from the South West.

In Scotland, officials recorded two deaths in the past 24 hours of people who tested positive for coronavirus, taking the country's overal death toll to 2,472.

The figures were published as part of the Scottish Government’s daily statistical update as Scotland enters its first weekend since moving into phase two of the four-step plan to ease lockdown.

The statistics indicate that as of 9am on Saturday, 18,130 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 26 from 18,104 the previous day.

A statement published with the figures said: “This will be an underestimate of the number of cases.

“Not everyone with the virus will display symptoms and not all those with symptoms will be tested.”

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland authorities recorded one further Covid-19 death.

The death brings to 545 the total number of deaths recorded by the Department of Health - a toll that primarily focuses on fatalities within hospitals.

There were no new confirmed cases of the virus announced on Saturday, leaving the total since the outbreak began in the region standing at 4,866.

Figures for Wales were yet to be released.
