UK coronavirus death toll rises by 280

The UK coronavirus death toll has risen by 280, bringing the total to 42,927.

It comes after new data from the Office for National Statistics showed that number of people dying with Covid-19 in England and Wales has fallen to the lowest weekly level since lockdown was imposed.

The toll includes 109 deaths that occurred in April, May and June and have been added to the total “due to improvements in how the Covid-19 death data is processed in England”. Only 55 of the 280 deaths were in hospitals, the rest were in care homes and the wider community.

The Government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which are thought to have passed 54,000.

In England, 46 hospital deaths related to Covid-19 were recorded on Monday.

This brings the total number of confirmed hospital deaths in England to 28,384.

Patients were aged between 51 and 97 years old. Two, aged 84 and 87, had no known underlying health conditions.

The total number of cases in the region increased by 98 to 15,295.

In Scotland, a total of 2,476 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, up by four from 2,472 on Monday, Nicola Sturgeon said.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s daily coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said 18,182 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 12 from 18,170 the previous day.

There are 865 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected Covid-19, a decrease of two in 24 hours.

Of these patients, 21 were in intensive care, up by six.

Ms Sturgeon said this was down from 221 patients in ICU on April 12.
