Two people were killed and a third is missing after torrential rain and high winds battered Britain at New Year.
A woman was killed when part of a cliff face fell on her, a man died after apparently coming into contact with a fallen electricity cable, and another was washed out to sea by a large wave.
Meanwhile, engineers were battling to reconnect thousands of homes without power in Scotland, where some traditional Hogmanay celebrations were called off because of the storms.
The woman, named by police as Caroline Palser, 55, of Priory Close, Frizington, died when part of a cliff face fell on her in the South Beach area of Whitehaven, Cumbria. She was walking along the shore when she was buried by the rubble.
Rescuers battled desperately to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene. A police spokesman said the weather had been wet and windy for several days.
A man in his 60s was electrocuted by a fallen cable in a field close to Wembury, near Plymouth, Devon.
A Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said there were stormy conditions in the area at the time. Police cordoned off the area, and investigations for the Health and Safety Executive will be carried out.
Meanwhile the search for a holidaymaker washed into heavy seas after climbing down cliffs to look at a "blow hole" has been called off.
The 24 year old man from the Derby area vanished at Trevone beach near Padstow, Cornwall, on Sunday afternoon.
Devon and Cornwall police said there were high seas and gale force winds when the man and another friend climbed a short way down the cliff. While standing on a ledge within the hole, a large wave struck the ledge and dislodged the man, washing him into the sea.
