A student paramedic has died after an ambulance she was travelling in was involved in a crash with a car.

The woman, 31, was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham but died from her injuries following the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Needwood, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, at around 5.45pm after reports of a collision between an ambulance and a BMW 3 series.

Two other ambulance crew members were taken to Queens Hospital Burton, along with the BMW driver who is receiving treatment for a leg injury.

An investigation was launched and collision experts were sent to the scene.

Staffordshire Police have asked for witnesses to come forward, especially anyone with dashcam footage of the incident.

West Midlands Ambulance Service Trust chief executive Anthony Marsh said: "This is an incident that will affect every member of our staff.

"Our staff deal with difficult incidents every day, but to lose one of your colleagues will always make it that much harder.

"We are very lucky to have so many student paramedics who want to work with us and it is tragic that someone who showed so much promise has died doing the job that they loved."

Police said the victim's family will be offered support from specialist officers.
