Skies around the world were lit up by the first full moon of 2018, known as the Wolf Moon.

Spectacular photos captured the brighter than normal moon on New Year's Day - the second of three 'supermoons' in the space of two months.

The occurrence happens as a full moon aligns with the point closest to the earth in the moon's elliptical orbit.

Nasa said the moon on New Year's Day was the "biggest and brightest of 2018."

The organisation tweeted: "Called the Wolf Moon, we’re calling it our #NewYearsDay Moon and the most super of the three supermoons this winter."

The spectacular sight was visible to observers from London as the capital enjoyed clear skies.
