Sainsbury’s is taking the precautionary action of recalling Taste the Difference Medjool dates

Sainsbury’s have recalled certain packs of dates over fears they may have been contaminated with Hepatitis A.

The supermarket issued an urgent appeal asking customers to return packets of Taste the Difference Medjool dates (200g and 500g) with the suppliers code K0014 EW.

Customers will receive a full refund and no other products have been affected, Sainsbury’s said.

Hepatitis A is a liver infection and its symptoms include fever, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea.

The Muslim Association of Britain urged its followers on Twitter to “check the label this Ramadan” after they heard about the potential contamination.

Dates are popular during Ramadan because they are traditionally eaten to break a fast.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told the Standard: “The safety of our products is our highest priority. We are asking customers not to consume these products and return them to their nearest store for a refund.

“We are urgently investigating with our supplier and remain in close contact with the Food Standards Agency.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.”
