Members of the public attending Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding have reportedly been told to "bring your own picnic".

Some 1,200 people who have "served their communities" have been invited to the grounds of Windsor Castle to see the royal wedding close up on May 19.

However some claim they've been told to bring a picnic to the event as it will not be possible to buy food and drink on site.

Guests are expected to stay on the verges outside St George’s Chapel for around four-hours and 15 minutes.

Those attending have received letters from representatives of the royal family asking them to bring their own picnic.

Saeed Atcha, 21, founded Xplode, a Bolton based youth magazine in 2011. He told the Guardian that some people attending the wedding with him were confused as to why there wasn't any food available.

He said: "They were saying how come they have this money and you have to bring a picnic. I am of the same opinion. It's unfathomable."

Mr Atcha added that he'd looked into the idea of bringing a McDonald's "but I'm not sure I'll be able to bring in a fillet meal."

Kensington Palace have indicated that there will be some refreshments available but haven't elaborated what.

The 1,200 guests were invited after the couple said they wanted all members of the public "to feel part of the celebrations too."

Another 1,400 palace staff and Windsor residents will join them alongside 200 people from various charities.

A statement from Kensington Palace said: “The couple has asked that the people chosen are from a broad range of backgrounds and ages, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities.”

The ceremony will be attended by 600 people. They have all been invited to the lunchtime reception at St George's Hall, which is being given by the Queen.

While there will also be an evening ceremony for 200 people at Frogmore House, hosted by the Prince of Wales.

Those not invited to the ceremony or inside the castle's grounds will still be able to see the couple as they make their way through Windsor in a carriage.
