The Queen left hospital today after spending the night being treated for gastroenteritis.

Wearing a red dress coat, the 86-year-old smiled and walked steadily as she left King Edward VII’s Hospital in Marylebone.

The Queen thanked nurses before being driven a way in a black Bentley in a police convoy. She was said to be in good spirits despite her bout of illness.

She has cancelled all her engagements for this week, including a planned visit to Rome, after falling ill last Friday.

The Queen had spent the weekend at Windsor Castle but was driven to hospital yesterday afternoon on the advice of her doctor, Professor John Cunningham.

It is the first time in almost a decade that she has been ill enough to spend time in hospital.

She is unlikely to be back on duty until next Monday at the earliest but according to reports was determined to resume her engagements as soon as possible.

A royal source said: “She is very much known for not making a fuss.” Prince Philip, 91, was today going ahead with a visit to the Royal Thames Yacht Club, of which he is patron.

In 2003 the Queen was admitted to King Edward VII’s for knee surgery and the removal of a growth on her face.

Gastroenteritis can be fatal for vulnerable groups such as the elderly. Most of the 190 deaths a year in England and Wales involve people aged over 65.
