Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral will be held on September 19, officials have confirmed.

Although further details of the event will be released in the coming days, the Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk said the service will commence at 11am.

The Queen’s coffin - which is lying in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle – will be taken by road to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on Sunday September 11, on a six-hour journey by hearse.

It will be carried from the estate tomorrow at 10am. The coffin will then lie in the Throne Room to allow staff to pay their respects.

On Monday, the King and Queen Consort will travel to Edinburgh to join a procession which will take the coffin to St Giles Cathedral.

A statement from Buckingam Palace said: “Her Majesty’s Coffin will then lie at rest in St Giles’ Cathedral, guarded by Vigils from The Royal Company of Archers, to allow the people of Scotland to pay their respects.”

In the evening, the King and other members of the Royal Family will mount a vigil before the coffin is flown to RAF Northolt accompanied by the Princess Royal.

The state hearse will then taken the coffin to Buckingham Palace where members of the royal household will pay their respects.

On Wednesday, the coffin will then be taken to the Palace of Westminster where a short service will be conducted. The lying in state will then begin and last for four days.

Buckingham Palace added: “Following the State Funeral, the Coffin will travel in Procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch.

“From Wellington Arch, the Coffin will travel to Windsor and once there, the State Hearse will travel in Procession to St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle via the Long Walk. A Committal Service will then take place in St George’s Chapel.”
