An 80 year-old woman was held hostage inside her own home by an angry flock of seagulls.

Brighton pensioner Barbara Cox spent 72 hours hiding inside her home after one of the birds pecked her leg so hard that it left a bloody wound.

The terrified retired accountant told the Argus she saw a flock protecting a dead chick at the bottom of her garden while hanging out her washing before two gulls swooped down and attacked her.

After managing to break free, Ms Cox dialled 999 in tears but police refused to come to her rescue.

Three days after the attack, Mrs Cox managed to pluck up the courage to go to A&E where she was given a tetanus jab.

A Sussex Police spokesman said seagulls are not a police matter.
