New figures suggest peanut butter is set to overtake jam as Britain's favourite food spread.

Peanut butter sales rose by nearly a fifth in 2017, according to data collected by consumer insight firm Kantar Worldpanel.

The latest industry statistics show jam was the only spread to suffer a loss last year - down 2.9 per cent to £106 million.

Meanwhile peanut butter sales soared by around 17 per cent - reaching a grand total of £94 million for the year.

Sweet spreads such as jam - which contains around 10g of sugar per tablespoon - are currently being targeted by Public Health England's sugar reduction plan.

Kantar's research suggests the condiment's growth could be put down the rise of more expensive brands which are lower in sugar and "more organic".

The food spreads market is now estimated to be worth more than half a billion pounds in the UK - a six per cent rise since last year.

Market experts speculate marmalade sales, which rose by 2.9 per cent, may have been helped by the popularity of the hit family film Paddington 2.
