An outraged Tesco shopper has called on the supermarket to ban customers from walking the aisles in their pyjamas as he branded them “disgusting” on social media.
The man posted a message on the supermarket giant’s Facebook page asking bosses to enforce new rules alongside a picture of two women in their dressing gowns.
The picture was taken on Tuesday night at a branch in Manchester and sparked a heated debate as Facebook users hit out at the post.
The shopper, who asked to remain anonymous, wrote: “Dear Tesco, please can you put a rule in place that people like this will not be served in your stores. It’s bloody disgusting.
“This was at 7pm last night at your Tesco Salford store and I have seen other people dressed similar on a regular basis. I mean who doesn’t have time to get changed into clothes to go shopping.”
A Tesco spokeswoman said it was down to management to decide what dress is appropriate with no formal code in place.
She replied: “Many of our customers have told us that they feel uncomfortable when they see other shoppers wearing unsuitable clothing in our stores and we do try to find a balance that everyone is happy with.
“Although we don't have a formal dress code in our stores, we rely on our management team to use their discretion and common sense.”
While some agreed with the man and branded the women “bone idle”, others ridiculed him for taking the photograph.
One wrote: “I for one find it uncomfortable to have to shop alongside people who spend their time taking photographs of strangers minding their own business rather than just ignoring things that do not affect them in any way.”
The post has since been deleted.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We do not have a formal dress code in our stores and colleagues use their common sense and discretion when speaking to customers about this issue."
