The body of a man wearing just socks has been discovered on a Tyneside beach.

A dog-walker reported finding a body in Whitley Bay around 8.20am on Saturday.

Northumbria Police has launched an investigation into the death which is currently being treated as unexplained, the BBC reported.

The area around Brown’s Bay has been cordoned off by police.

Detectives have asked residents with houses facing the bay to share any CCTV footage they may have.

It is not yet clear whether the man died on the beach or was washed on to it by the tide.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Officers are carrying out enquiries into the incident and the death is currently being treated as unexplained.”

Anyone who may have information should contact officers on 101 quoting reference number 247 30/12/17.
