Murder hunt after girl's body found

12 April 2012

Police investigating the discovery of a girl's body said they are now treating her death as murder.

A man and woman were arrested after the girl was found dead at a house in the Harehills area of Leeds.

But a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the 38-year-old man and 37-year-old woman were released without charge overnight.

A 39-year-old man has now been arrested in connection with the incident.

No details of the victim have been released but sources said she was believed to be a girl in her early teens.

Her body was found on Monday afternoon in Compton Row in Harehills. Neighbours said a couple lived at the property with their young daughter.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said on Tuesday: "This matter is now being treated as a murder inquiry and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward who were in the vicinity of Compton Row, Harehills, in Leeds, between 3pm and 3.30pm."

Compton Row was sealed off on Monday, with uniformed officers guarding the exit and entrance.

Blue police tape was strung up at either end to prevent vehicles from accessing the street.

Forensic officers, some wearing protective white boilersuits, were seen working outside one property, taking photos under bright arc lights and examining the scene.
