MPs back bid to avoid postal strike

12 April 2012

Scores of MPs have backed an attempt by the postal workers' union to head off a national strike over pay and jobs, it was revealed.

An early day motion (EDM) tabled in the Commons supporting a peace offer put forward by the Communication Workers Union has been signed by more than 60 MPs.

Thousands of postal workers in London staged another strike in the latest wave of industrial action that has been held in different parts of the UK for the past few months.

The union has warned it will name strike dates on Thursday unless there is a last-minute breakthrough to the deadlocked dispute.

The EDM, tabled by Morecambe and Lunesdale MP Geraldine Smith, reads: "This House welcomes the proposals put forward by the Communication Workers Union seeking to find a resolution to the current postal dispute, in particular their offer to explore the possibility of third party mediation, and calls on the Government to do all in its power to ensure that Royal Mail responds positively to the union's proposal."

The Royal Mail condemned the threat of a national strike last night and called on the union to call off the threatened action, warning it was damaging the entire postal service.
