"Monster sprouts" which are larger than golf balls are set to hit the shelves of UK supermarkets, it has been announced.

The super-size brussels sprouts are about a third bigger and weigh more than double an average sprout.

The gigantic brassicas, which are the biggest for a decade, will go on sale at Morrisons stores this week.

The super-size sprouts measure approximately 1.6 inches (4cm) wide and 1.8 inches (4.5cm) long.

This compares to the typical size of 1.2 inches (3cm) and 1.4 inches (3.5cm) long, while golf balls are around 1.6-inches (43mm) in diameter.

Each giant sprout, which will take on average between one and two extra minutes to cook, is expected to weigh around 1.2 ounces (35g), compared to a typical 0.5 ounces (15g).

This year's milder weather is being cited as the primary reason for why the sprouts have grown bigger.

John Clappison, one of Morrisons sprout growers, whose farm is in East Yorkshire said: “Our sprout plants have loved the warmer weather.

"The higher temperatures have made them shoot up and produce the biggest most succulent sprouts that we’ve seen 10 years!”

Graham Cottee, sprout buyer at Morrisons said: "We expect these bigger sprouts will be highly sought after by some sprout lovers!”
